Evidence

What goes into an evidence pack, and what comes out

An evidence pack is the record a verifier audits. It shows where a claim comes from, how each figure was produced, how certain it is, and what went wrong along the way.

The evidence chain

We prepare the evidence. Independent bodies verify it.

Prepared by Climate Ground

  1. 1InputsSatellite and radar observations, field sensors, farmer records and laboratory results.
  2. 2ChecksPlace, time, units and source tested; gaps and disagreements flagged.
  3. 3ModelsThe methodology's models estimate what cannot be measured directly, with uncertainty.
  4. 4ReviewA person signs off each result and every exception attached to it.
  5. 5Evidence packEvery figure labelled and sourced, ready for verification.

Independent

  1. 6VerificationAn accredited verifier checks the pack. The registry decides what is issued.

Raw data is always kept. A correction is logged as a new version and never written over the original.

Labels

Every figure says what kind of evidence it is, and where it stands

Evidence type: what kind of value it is

Measured
Read directly by a sensor, a laboratory or a field survey, with its calibration and its time.
Modelled
Calculated by a named model and version from measured inputs, with its uncertainty.
Estimated
Filled in where a measurement is missing, such as a cloud gap, and always shown as estimated.

Review status: where it is in the process

Reviewed
A person has checked the value and any exception attached to it.
Pending review
Waiting for a person. Pending values stay out of every total.

Neither label means verified. Verification is done by accredited, independent bodies.

Specimen

A specimen evidence pack

This specimen uses the illustrative figures from the soil example. Each line carries its label and its source.

What makes it auditable

  • Labels and sourcesEvery figure carries its evidence type and the source behind it.
  • Raw data keptEvery correction is logged as a new version.
  • Uncertainty statedShown beside the figure, never hidden in a footnote.
  • Exceptions shownWith who resolved them, and when.
  • Method and version namedSo the result can be reproduced from the same data.

Verification

Our work ends where verification begins

Climate Ground collects and checks the evidence, runs the methodology's models and drafts the monitoring report. The project developer submits it. An accredited validation and verification body checks it, and the registry decides what is issued.

Our words are evidence, auditable and ready for verification. We never call our own work verified.

Validation and verification bodies are “qualified, independent third-party auditors who are approved by Verra.”
